During Mardi Gras, West finds himself in the clutches of Major Hazard, the leader of a group of disabled Civil War veterans seeking vengeance against the camp's commandant, Mosely. Despite his reservations, Jim agrees to assist them, only to have Mosely snatched away by the soldiers. Following their trail to an abandoned camp, Jim discovers that Hazard and his crew are not actually crippled; they had been colluding with Mosely, who had stolen a stash of gold and concealed it. After Mosely betrays them, they turn their sights on the gold. With Artie posing as a geologist using a divining rod to create a distraction, Jim makes his escape, leading to a confrontation where Hazard meets his end when the gold tumbles down from the camp's water tower.
