Construction of the airfield began in 1942, and by mid-1943, East Kirkby's runways were operational, welcoming 57 Squadron with their Lancasters. In November 1943, 630 Squadron was established and remained on-site for the rest of the war. The personnel stationed at East Kirkby quickly surpassed 2,000. While the base experienced losses during the Berlin and Nuremberg raids, the most devastating night occurred on June 21, 1944, when 11 aircraft were lost in a single attack. In April 1945, a catastrophic fire broke out while a Lancaster was being loaded, causing a massive explosion that killed four people, destroyed six Lancasters, and damaged fourteen others. After the war, the airfield was utilized for trials and briefly occupied by the United States Air Force in the mid-1950s. It closed in 1958, and the RAF officially disposed of the site in 1970.
