S02E02 Greenland Is Melting & Bonded Labor

Mar 21, 2014 Season 2 Episode 2 Documentary, News, War & Politics

Episode Overview

In 2013, Greenland experienced its hottest temperatures on record. While some dismiss this as inconsequential, the island loses an amount of water each year equivalent to three Chesapeake Bays, significantly impacting global sea levels. Shane Smith joins climate scientist Jason Box on an expedition to Greenland to investigate the causes behind the melting ice and the impending sea level rise that could lead to widespread devastation much sooner than anticipated. Meanwhile, in Pakistan, millions of men, women, and children are trapped as bonded laborers in brick kilns, a situation exacerbated by systemic disenfranchisement and rampant corruption within the industry and law enforcement. Fazeelat Aslam visits these kilns to witness the harsh realities faced by the workers and to explore how various organizations are working to combat this form of modern slavery and rescue those affected.
