Peter Lilienthal
Peter Lilienthal, a distinguished filmmaker and educator, was born into a family that emigrated to Uruguay in 1939. His artistic journey began in Germany, where in 1956 he earned a scholarship to the Hochschule der Kuenste (HDK) in Berlin. From 1959 to 1964, he made significant strides in television, working with the German channel Suedwestfunk. Initially starting as an assistant, he swiftly advanced to the role of director, allowing him to hone his craft and develop his unique voice in storytelling.
In the late 1960s, Lilienthal took on the role of lecturer at the Deutsche Film- und Fernsehakademie in Berlin during the 1967/68 academic year, sharing his expertise with a new generation of filmmakers. His entrepreneurial spirit shone through as he co-founded the German distribution company Filmverlag der Autoren, which played a vital role in promoting auteur cinema in Germany.
Since 1985, Lilienthal has served as the head of the Film and Media Art section at the Akademie der Kuenste in Berlin, where he continues to influence and inspire aspiring artists. His contributions to the film industry, both as a creator and an educator, have left a lasting impact on the landscape of German cinema, establishing him as a pivotal figure in the field.
