Jaime Chávarri, a prominent Spanish film director, was born in Madrid and initially pursued a law degree, although he never entered the legal profession. His passion for cinema led him to the Escuela Oficial de Cinematografía, where he studied for two years. During this time, he also contributed to the film magazine Film Ideal as a critic and created several short films in super-8 format.

Chávarri made his directorial debut with the feature film *Los viajes escolares* in 1974. He gained critical acclaim with *El desencanto* (1976), a documentary about the poet Leopoldo Panero, which earned the Best Film Award from the Círculo de Escritores Cinematográficos. His subsequent works include *A un dios desconocido* (1977), featuring Héctor Alterio, and *Dedicatoria* (1980). In 1983, he directed *Bearn o la sala de las muñecas*, which starred notable actors like Fernando Rey and Imanol Arias.

One of his most celebrated films, *Las bicicletas son para el verano* (1984), adapted from a play by Fernando Fernán Gómez, explores the impact of the Spanish Civil War. His filmography also includes *El río de oro* (1986), *Las cosas del querer* (1989), and the comedic *Tierno verano de lujurias y azoteas* (1992).

In 1996, he released *Gran Slalom*, followed by the Spanish-Argentine co-production *Sus ojos se cerraron y el mundo sigue andando* (1997). His later works include *Besos para todos* (2002) and *El año del diluvio* (2004).
