Barbara Steele
Barbara Steele, born on December 29, 1937, in Birkenhead, Merseyside, England, is a renowned English actress recognized for her prominent roles in Italian gothic horror films during the 1960s. Her career-defining moment came with her performance in Mario Bava’s iconic film Black Sunday (1960), which is now considered a landmark in the genre.
Throughout her career, Steele appeared in numerous horror features, including The Horrible Dr. Hichcock (1962) and The Ghost, a film directed by Riccardo Freda, as well as Roger Corman's 1961 adaptation of Edgar Allan Poe's story The Pit and the Pendulum. In addition to her film work, she made guest appearances on various British television programs, including the popular spy series Danger Man, starring Patrick McGoohan. In 2010, Steele lent her voice to the Dark Shadows audio drama titled The Night Whispers.
That same year, she was interviewed by actor and writer Mark Gatiss regarding her iconic role in Black Sunday for his BBC documentary series, A History of Horror. Steele's contributions to the horror genre and her distinctive performances have solidified her status as a legendary figure in cinematic history.
