Tomoko Naraoka
Tomoko Naraoka (奈良岡 朋子, Naraoka Tomoko), born on December 1, 1929, is a renowned Japanese actress and narrator. Hailing from Komagome, Hongō—now part of Bunkyo in Tokyo—she is the daughter of a painter and pursued her education at Joshibi University of Art and Design.
Naraoka launched her film career in 1949 with a role in "Chijin no Ai," an adaptation of the novel "Naomi." She gained further recognition with her participation in the 1981 movie "Rengō Kantai" (translated as "Combined Fleet" in the U.S.). Her filmography includes appearances in the beloved "Otoko wa Tsurai yo" series, particularly in the 1988 installment "Torajirō Sarada Kinenbi," as well as in eight films from the "Tsuribaka Nisshi" series.
In addition to her film work, Naraoka has made significant contributions to Japanese television, particularly through NHK Taiga dramas. She first appeared in the 1969 production "Ten to Chi to," playing the spouse of Uesugi Sadazane. Her portrayal of Kita no Mandokoro, wife of Toyotomi Hideyoshi, in "Haru no Sakamichi" (1971) is particularly memorable, as is her role in the 1976 drama "Kaze to Kumo to Niji to." Naraoka has also lent her voice to numerous narrations, including the 1986 series "Inochi," the 1989 "Kasuga no Tsubone," and the acclaimed 2008 drama "Atsuhime."
