John Gavin (April 8, 1931 – February 9, 2018) was a multifaceted American actor and diplomat, known for his impactful roles in classic cinema as well as for his significant contributions to arts advocacy. He served as the United States Ambassador to Mexico from 1981 to 1986 and held the presidency of the Screen Actors Guild from 1971 to 1973. Gavin gained fame through notable performances in films such as Imitation of Life (1959), Spartacus (1960), Psycho (1960), and Thoroughly Modern Millie (1967), often collaborating with esteemed producer Ross Hunter.

Born Juan Vincent Apablasa Jr., Gavin hailed from a rich cultural background, with Mexican, Chilean, and Spanish heritage, and was fluent in Spanish. His father, Juan Vincent Apablasa Sr., was Chilean, with ancestral roots tracing back to early California landowners during the Spanish era. His mother, Delia Diana Pablos, divorced when he was just two years old. Following this, she remarried Herald Ray Golenor, who adopted Gavin, leading to the change of his name to John Anthony Golenor.
