Derek Martin emerged as a prominent voice of the working class in British film and television, making significant contributions since the 1970s. Born Derek William Rapp in 1933, he initially served in the RAF during his National Service and took on various roles, including road worker, porter at Smithfield Meat Market, and professional gambler. His foray into the entertainment industry began as an extra and stunt performer, featuring in notable series like Doctor Who.

After sustaining an injury while working on Elizabeth I in 1971, Martin transitioned to acting, with his breakthrough role as the morally ambiguous detective Fred Pyle in GF Newman’s groundbreaking 1978 drama Law & Order.
