Vlastimil Harapes
Vlastimil Harapes (July 24, 1946 – May 15, 2024) was a celebrated Czech dancer, choreographer, and actor whose influence on the performing arts was profound. He gained prominence as a soloist with the National Theatre Ballet in Prague, eventually ascending to the role of artistic director, where he left an indelible mark on the ballet scene. Harapes was renowned for his compelling performances in notable films, including the critically acclaimed *Marketa Lazarová* (1967) and the popular comedy *Jak vytrhnout velrybě stoličku* (1977).
Born in Chomutov, Czechoslovakia, he honed his craft at the Prague Dance Conservatory and furthered his ballet studies in Saint Petersburg, Russia. Over his extensive career, Harapes showcased his talents on international stages and made significant contributions to theater and television. Beyond the arts, he was also politically active, notably running as an independent candidate in the 2016 Czech Senate election.
Harapes's personal life included a marriage to the renowned singer Hana Zagorová from 1986 to 1992 and a long-term partnership with playwright Josef Topol, which he kept private until 2013. He passed away at the age of 77 due to lung cancer, leaving behind a legacy as a pioneer in Czech dance and an influential figure in the cultural landscape.
