Richard O'Barry

Richard "Ric" O'Barry, born around 1939, initially gained fame in the 1960s as the trainer of the five dolphins featured in the beloved television series *Flipper*. However, his perspective on dolphin captivity shifted dramatically following the tragic death of Kathy, one of the dolphins he had trained, whom he claims committed suicide in his arms. This pivotal moment inspired O'Barry to transition from trainer to activist, leading him to challenge the very industry he once supported.

In 1970, he established the Dolphin Project, a pioneering organization dedicated to raising awareness about the ethical implications of dolphin captivity and advocating for the release of captive dolphins whenever possible. O'Barry's efforts have played a significant role in changing public attitudes towards marine mammal captivity.

His commitment to dolphin welfare was further spotlighted in the Academy Award-winning documentary *The Cove* (2009), which revealed the harrowing practices of dolphin hunting in Taiji, Japan, utilizing undercover methods to bring the issue to worldwide attention. Through his ongoing activism and dedication, Ric O'Barry has become a leading voice for marine mammal rights, making significant contributions to the conservation movement and inspiring many to join the fight against dolphin captivity.
