Betty Field (February 8, 1913 – September 13, 1973) was an accomplished American actress recognized for her work in both film and theater. She was a direct descendant of the Pilgrims, specifically John Alden and Priscilla Mullins, through her father.

Born in Boston, Massachusetts to George Field and Katharine Lynch, Field's acting journey commenced on the London stage, where she showcased her talents in Howard Lindsay's comedic production, She Loves Me Not. After this initial success, she returned to the U.S. and took part in various theatrical productions before making her film debut in 1939. Her portrayal of Mae, the lone female character in the classic film Of Mice and Men, marked her as a serious dramatic performer.

Field starred alongside John Wayne in the 1941 film The Shepherd of the Hills and took on notable supporting roles in films such as Kings Row (1942), where she depicted a character impacted by incest—a theme that was heavily censored at the time.

Though she cherished her Broadway performances, including roles in Elmer Rice's Dream Girl and Jean Anouilh's The Waltz of the Toreadors, she frequently returned to cinema. Her filmography includes appearances in Flesh and Fantasy (1943), The Southerner (1945), The Great Gatsby (1949), Picnic (1955), Bus Stop (1956), Peyton Place (1957), BUtterfield 8 (1960), and Birdman of Alcatraz (1962). Field's last film role was in Coogan's Bluff in 1968, and her career also extended to television appearances.
