Gladys George
Gladys George was a renowned American actress whose stage career began remarkably early, at just 3 years old, when she toured the United States alongside her parents. In the 1920s, she made her mark on Broadway, achieving notable success with roles in plays such as *Personal Appearance*, a comedy by Lawrence Riley, which later saw a famous adaptation by Mae West in *Go West, Young Man*. In 1936, George earned an Academy Award nomination for Best Actress for her performance in *Valiant Is the Word for Carrie*.
Her Broadway credentials also included productions like *The Distant City*, *Lady in Waiting*, and *The Betrothal*. Beyond the theater, George's film career featured prominent roles in *Madame X* (1937) and *Love is a Headache*, alongside appearances in classics like *The Roaring Twenties* (1939), *The Way of All Flesh* (1940), *The Best Years of Our Lives* (1946), and *He Ran All the Way* (1951). She is particularly remembered for her portrayal of Iva Archer, the widow of Miles Archer, in *The Maltese Falcon*, and as Mme. Du Barry in *Marie Antoinette*.
In her later years, George found success with roles such as Lute Mae Sanders in *Flamingo Road*, a brief but impactful appearance as Miss Hatch in *Detective Story*, and as the troubled mother in *Lullaby of Broadway*, opposite Doris Day. Her illustrious career left a lasting legacy in both stage and film.
