John Astin
John Astin, an American actor renowned for his dark hair and signature mustache, gained iconic status for his quirky portrayal of Gomez Addams in the beloved television series The Addams Family, which aired from 1964 to 1966. Born on March 30, 1930, in Baltimore, Maryland, as John Allen Astin, he is the son of Allen V. and Margaret Astin, and has a brother named Alexander. Standing at 5' 11" (1.8 m), Astin initially pursued mathematics at Washington & Jefferson College and Johns Hopkins University but soon discovered his passion for the performing arts, leading him to minor theatrical roles and voice-over work.
Astin's acting career took off with a supporting role in West Side Story (1961), followed by appearances in films such as That Touch of Mink (1962) and Move Over, Darling (1963). His role as Gomez Addams became a cultural phenomenon, although the show's popularity waned after two seasons. He later starred in films like Bunny O'Hare (1971) and the comedic spoof Evil Roy Slade (1972), and reprised his role in various adaptations of The Addams Family.
Astin has been married three times, first to Suzanne Hahn (1956-1972) with whom he had three sons. He then married actress Patty Duke in 1972, welcoming two sons, including adopted Sean Astin. Astin later wed Valerie Ann Sandobal in 1989 and remains married today. His contributions to entertainment include voice roles in animated series and films, and he has been active in the industry since 1957. He also received an Academy Award nomination for his directorial debut, the comedic short Prelude (1968). Astin currently resides in Baltimore with his wife.
