Peter Wang
Peter Wang, born in 1938 in Beijing, was raised in an intellectually stimulating environment, thanks to his father, Wang Shoukang, a noted linguist and professor at Beijing Normal University. In 1948, following the establishment of the "Mandarin Daily" in Taipei, Wang Shoukang took on the role of vice president, prompting the family’s relocation to Taiwan. Peter pursued a degree in Electrical Engineering at National Taiwan University, where he faced societal biases favoring traditional paths over the liberal arts.
Seeking broader horizons, he moved to the United States for further studies, but this journey led to him being blacklisted by both Taiwan and mainland China. Despite a successful career in academia and engineering, Wang felt an unquenchable passion for the dramatic arts stirring within him during the 1980s. This calling prompted him to reassess his life’s direction.
After considerable reflection, he made the bold decision to leave his stable university position to immerse himself in the film industry. Wang’s transition from engineer to filmmaker marked a significant turning point, allowing him to explore his creative talents in drama and cinema. His journey is a testament to the pursuit of one’s true calling, illustrating how passion can lead to profound personal and professional transformation.
