Yasuaki Kurata
Yasuaki Kurata, also known as David Kurata, was born on March 20, 1946, in Sakura-mura, Niihari District, Ibaraki, which is now part of Tsukuba. A prominent figure in the realm of action cinema, Kurata is celebrated for his expertise in martial arts, holding impressive dan ranks: 5th degree in karate, 3rd degree in judo, and 2nd degree in aikido. His dynamic performances have made a significant impact, particularly noted for his memorable confrontation with Jet Li in the iconic film "Fist of Legend" and his formidable portrayal of a villain in "So Close." Additionally, Kurata is fluent in Cantonese, which has enhanced his roles in various Hong Kong productions.
After honing his craft in performing arts at Nihon University and Toei Theater School, he embarked on his acting career in the late 1960s. In 1971, Kurata made his mark in Hong Kong cinema with the Shaw Brothers' kung-fu classic "Angry Guest." His filmography boasts numerous appearances in action films and television series.
Beyond acting, Kurata is the founder of Kurata Promotion, a stunt agency established in 1976, and he shares his expertise by teaching at the University of Creation, Art, Music & Social Work. He also serves as the chief advisor to the All Japan Nunchaku League. In 2004, he authored "Hong Kong Action Star Kōyūroku," further cementing his legacy in the martial arts film community.
