Steven Seagal is a multifaceted American figure celebrated for his roles as an action film star, producer, writer, martial artist, guitarist, and reserve deputy sheriff.

A seasoned martial artist, Seagal holds a 7th-dan black belt in Aikido and began his career as an Aikido instructor in Japan, where he was notably the first foreigner to run an Aikido dojo. He later relocated to Los Angeles, and made his film debut in 1988 with "Above the Law." By 1991, he had starred in several successful films, with his breakout role coming in "Under Siege" (1992) as Casey Ryback, a Navy SEAL counter-terrorist expert.

However, his career faced challenges when "On Deadly Ground" (1994), which he directed, and "Under Siege 2: Dark Territory" (1995) underperformed at the box office. Throughout the late 1990s, Seagal appeared in a handful of theatrical releases and several direct-to-video projects, including "The Patriot." After a brief resurgence with films like "Exit Wounds" (2001) and "Half Past Dead" (2002), he transitioned almost entirely to low-budget direct-to-video films, appearing in 22 between 1998 and 2009. At 59, he returned to cinemas as Torrez in the 2010 film "Machete."

Beyond acting, Seagal is also a musician and the founder of Steven Seagal Enterprises. He is recognized for his commitment to environmental issues, animal rights, and support for the Tibetan independence movement alongside the 14th Dalai Lama, Tenzin Gyatso.
