Michael David Apted CMG (February 10, 1941 – January 7, 2021) was a distinguished English director and producer known for his impactful work in both television and film. Apted's career took off with the groundbreaking documentary series *Up*, which he directed from its inception in 1970 until 2019. This series is celebrated for its unique longitudinal study of a group of individuals in the UK, revisiting them every seven years to track their lives and changes.

Apted garnered significant acclaim for his feature films, including *Coal Miner's Daughter* (1980), which received seven Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture. His filmography also boasts notable titles such as *Gorillas in the Mist* (1988), *Nell* (1994), *The World Is Not Enough* (1999), a James Bond installment, and *Enigma* (2001). In 2006, his film *Amazing Grace*, which explores the life of abolitionist William Wilberforce, premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival to positive reviews.

In addition to his work in film, Apted held a prominent leadership role as the president of the Directors Guild of America from June 29, 2003, until 2009. His contributions to cinema and the arts were recognized when he was appointed Companion of the Order of St Michael and St George (CMG) during the 2008 Birthday Honours.
