Initially pursuing a law degree, Butler shifted gears in the mid-1990s, making his acting debut with small roles in films like *Mrs Brown* (1997) and the James Bond installment *Tomorrow Never Dies* (1997), as well as *Tale of the Mummy* (1998). His breakthrough came in 2000 when he took on the role of Count Dracula in the horror flick *Dracula 2000*.
