Marietta Canty
Marietta Canty (1905-1986) was a distinguished African American actress and dedicated community activist, celebrated for her contributions to both the arts and social causes. Beginning her theatrical journey on Broadway in 1933, Canty made a significant mark on the stage before transitioning to film.
Between 1940 and 1955, she appeared in approximately 40 films, often taking on supporting roles that showcased her talent. Her early film career included notable appearances in "The Lady is Waiting" (1942) and "The Spoilers" (1942), where she starred alongside the legendary Marlene Dietrich. However, she gained widespread recognition for her portrayal of Delilah, the housemaid to Spencer Tracy’s character, in the classic comedy "Father of the Bride" (1950) and its sequel "Father's Little Dividend" (1951).
Canty's final film role came in the iconic film "Rebel Without a Cause" (1955), featuring James Dean, where she left a lasting impression as the maid of Sal Mineo's character. After her film career, Canty chose to retire from acting, leaving behind a legacy that extends beyond the screen. In recognition of her activism and humanitarian efforts, she received numerous awards, solidifying her status as a prominent figure in both the entertainment industry and community service.
