Colin Clive was born on January 20, 1900, in St. Malo, France, to a British colonel and his wife. He received his education at the Convent of the Holy Cross in Boscombe and later at Stonyhurst College, with aspirations of attending Sandhurst, the prestigious British military academy. However, a riding accident that severely injured his knee thwarted his military ambitions. Instead, Clive pursued a career in acting, enrolling at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts. He made his stage debut in 1919, portraying 'Claude' in The Eclipse.

After nearly a decade of touring, Clive gained prominence for his role as 'Stanhope' in the acclaimed war play Journey's End, stepping in for Laurence Olivier. The character of Stanhope, like Clive himself, struggled with alcoholism—Clive used it to cope with his intense stage fright, while Stanhope turned to it to dull the horrors of war. Clive's performance in Journey's End marked a significant turning point in his career, leading to his film debut when the play was adapted for cinema in 1929.

Over the course of his career, Clive appeared in 18 films, each distinguished by their unique and stylish flair. Tragically, his life was cut short when he succumbed to tuberculosis, exacerbated by chronic alcoholism, on June 25, 1937, in Los Angeles, California, at the age of 37.
