Roland Curram

7 titles Acting Jan 01, 1932 Died: Jun 01, 2025 Brighton, East Sussex, England, UK

Roland Curram was a distinguished actor and author, leaving an indelible mark in both fields. He gained widespread recognition for portraying Julie Christie's traveling companion in the acclaimed film *Darling*, which earned an Academy Award, and for his role as the expatriate Freddie in the BBC soap opera *Eldorado*. Curram’s personal life was intertwined with the arts; he was married to actress Sheila Gish from 1964 until their divorce in 1985. Together, they welcomed two daughters, Lou Gish (1967–2006) and Kay Curram (born 1974), both of whom followed in their parents' footsteps into acting.

In the early 1990s, Curram publicly came out as gay, a significant moment that coincided with his portrayal of Freddie, a complex character balancing his past as a married man with fatherhood and his sexual identity. After stepping back from acting in the early 2000s, Curram embarked on a new journey as a novelist, producing works such as *The Problem with Happiness*, *Mother Loved Funerals*, *Man on the Beach*, and his memoir, *Which Way to Love?*. Curram continued to inspire through his writing until his passing at the age of 93 in 2025, leaving behind a legacy rich in creativity and personal courage.
