Yury Bykov
Yury Bykov was born in 1981 in Novomichurinsk, a quaint town in Russia's Ryazan region. Growing up in a family of factory workers, he pursued his passion for the arts by studying acting at the esteemed VGIK (Gerasimov Institute of Cinematography), graduating in 2005. Afterward, he gained experience performing in various theaters across Moscow.
In 2006, Bykov began to explore filmmaking, writing and directing his initial short films. His breakthrough came in 2009 with "The Boss," a short film in which he starred as the lead. This work earned him the top prize at the All-Russian National Film Festival Kinotavr. Bykov's directorial debut feature, "Live!" premiered in 2010, garnering the Special Jury Prize at the Taipei International Film Festival. The following year, his second feature, "The Major," was showcased in the Critics' Week at the prestigious Cannes Film Festival.
Bykov's 2014 film, "The Fool," achieved significant acclaim, winning multiple awards at the Locarno Film Festival, including Best Actor, and received recognition at Les Arcs Film Festival. Both "The Major" and "The Fool" enjoyed successful international releases, solidifying his reputation in global cinema. A multifaceted talent, Bykov not only writes and directs but has also edited and composed music for his early works, showcasing his versatility in the film industry.
