Lisa Nicole Carson was born in Brooklyn, New York. Her father, a journalism professor at the University of Florida, and her mother, a kindergarten teacher in New York, shaped her early life. Carson spent her teenage years in Gainesville, Florida, where she attended F. W. Buchholz High School. Following her parents' separation when she was 14, her mother returned to New York. In 1986, Carson earned second place in the regional "America's Junior Miss" talent competition held in Gainesville. After graduating high school in 1987, she moved back to New York with aspirations of becoming an actress, landing roles in various After School Specials and HBO short films.

Carson's stage presence was honed at the esteemed Negro Ensemble Company. Her breakout role came in 1991 with a guest appearance on *Law & Order*. In 1992, she made a minor appearance on *The Cosby Show*, and later secured a spot on *The Apollo Comedy Hour*. Her film credits include *Let’s Get Bizzee* (1993), *Jason's Lyric* (1994), and *Devil in a Blue Dress* (1995). Notably, she performed as an R&B singer in the television movie *Divas* (1995) and portrayed Mattie Monroe in *Eve's Bayou* (1997).

On TV, Carson is well-known for her recurring role as Carla Reece on NBC's *ER* from 1996 to 2001, and as prosecutor Renee Raddick in *Ally McBeal* from 1997 to 2002, which garnered her several award nominations. Despite her success, Carson faced challenges, including erratic behavior and health issues, leading to her dismissal from both shows. In 2012, she reprised her role as Renee Raddick for a guest appearance in the canceled NBC series *Harry's Law*.
