Margaret Lockwood, CBE (15 September 1916 – 15 July 1990), was a celebrated English actress renowned for her captivating performances, particularly in the 1945 Gainsborough film, The Wicked Lady. Born Margaret Mary Lockwood Day in Karachi, British India, she was the daughter of a railway administrator and a Scottish mother. The family returned to England during her childhood, where Lockwood pursued her education at Sydenham High School and a ladies' school in Kensington.

Her passion for acting blossomed early, and she trained at the Italia Conti Academy. Lockwood made her stage debut at just 12 years old in A Midsummer Night's Dream in 1928. She quickly became a prominent figure in London’s theatre scene, showcasing her talent in productions such as Cavalcade and Gertrude Jenning's Family Affairs.

Beginning her film career in 1934, Lockwood gained widespread recognition with Alfred Hitchcock's The Lady Vanishes in 1938, where she starred alongside Michael Redgrave. Her portrayal of the titular character in The Wicked Lady solidified her status as one of Britain's leading actresses, earning her the Daily Mail National Film Awards' First Prize for most popular actress in 1946.

Lockwood continued to shine on stage with notable performances in Noel Coward's Private Lives and Agatha Christie's Spider's Web. She enjoyed a successful television career, particularly with the series Justice, where her role garnered her multiple awards. Honored as a Commander of the Order of the British Empire in 1981, she spent her later years in seclusion before passing away in 1990. She is survived by her daughter, fellow actress Julia Clark.
