Mimi Pollak

Maria Helena "Mimi" Pollak was a distinguished Swedish actress and director, celebrated for her contributions to both stage and screen. Born in Sweden, she attended the prestigious Royal Dramatic Theatre School in Stockholm from 1922 to 1924, where she forged a lifelong friendship with fellow actress Greta Garbo, even coining the iconic name for her.

Pollak made her film debut in 1922 with "Amatörfilmen," and over the course of her career, she appeared in approximately 30 feature films and television productions, showcasing her versatility and talent. Her significant achievement came in 1948 when she became the first female director to be contracted by the Royal Dramatic Theatre (Dramaten). Her directorial debut, Jean Genet's "Jungfruleken" (known as "The Maids"), featured notable actresses Anita Björk and Maj-Britt Nilsson, marking a pivotal moment in Swedish theatre.
