Frances Gifford's entry into the film industry was anything but conventional. Born in Long Beach, California, she initially had no aspirations of becoming an actress. In fact, she had applied to UCLA when, at the age of 16, a visit to Samuel Goldwyn Studios changed her trajectory. While observing a film shoot, a studio executive noticed her and invited her to audition for a screen test. The studio was impressed and subsequently signed her to a contract. However, her early career was marked by minor roles, leading her to transfer to RKO Pictures, where similarly limited opportunities awaited her. After marrying actor James Dunn, she chose to step back from acting in 1938.

A nearly two-year hiatus ended with a small role in the classic film Mr. Smith Goes to Washington (1939), which reignited her career. She was signed by Paramount, which later loaned her to Republic Pictures, where she starred in the serial Jungle Girl (1941), a film based on an Edgar Rice Burroughs story that remains her most recognized work.

Despite her potential, Gifford's career faced numerous obstacles, including a serious car accident in 1948 that resulted in significant head injuries. Though she physically recovered, her acting opportunities diminished, leading to her final film appearance in 1953. In 1958, reports emerged of her being admitted to a California mental health facility due to her past injuries. After years of silence, she was rediscovered in Pasadena in 1983, having seemingly overcome her challenges and working at the city library. Frances Gifford passed away from emphysema in Pasadena in 1994.
