Dieter Augustin embarked on his professional journey with a commercial apprenticeship in Erlangen after completing high school. He further honed his craft at the Film and Television University in Munich, where he laid the groundwork for his future career. Augustin graced the stages of Munich, Detmold, and various touring theaters, showcasing his talent in live performances.

His film career began in 1966 with a short film directed by Marran Gosov, which marked the start of several collaborations with the director. Augustin became synonymous with light comedy, appearing in films such as *Engelchen*, *Die Jungfrau von Bamberg* (alongside Gila von Weitershausen), and *Helgalein* (with Anita Kupsch), where he often portrayed endearingly awkward characters.

In 1973, he gained widespread recognition as a comedian in the TV series *Klimbim*, where he portrayed the father of the "Klimbim family" and participated in various humorous skits during the show's inaugural season. After a year, he departed from the series, but his career continued to flourish. Notable works include Alfred Vohrer's film adaptation of Erich Kästner's *Three Men in the Snow*, Werner Herzog's *Woyzeck* (featuring Klaus Kinski), and the comedy *Tender Chaos*. Augustin also made appearances in various television shows, including *Der Kommissar* and Claude Chabrol’s *Histoires Insolites*. He is interred in Erlangen.
