Matheson Lang
Matheson Alexander Lang (May 15, 1879 – April 11, 1948) was a distinguished Canadian actor and playwright who made significant contributions to both stage and film during the early 20th century. He gained prominence in Great Britain, particularly for his exceptional portrayals of characters in Shakespearean productions.
In 1916, Lang made a groundbreaking transition to film, taking on the role of Shylock in a cinematic adaptation of The Merchant of Venice, featuring his wife as Portia. This marked him as one of the first prominent theatre actors to embrace the silver screen. Throughout the 1920s, Lang established himself as one of the leading stars in British cinema, with over 30 film appearances to his credit. Notable performances included his portrayals of Guy Fawkes in the 1923 film, Matthias in The Wandering Jew (also 1923, co-starring his wife), as well as Henry IV in Henry, King of Navarre (1924) and Henry V in Royal Cavalcade (1935).
In addition to acting, Lang was also a talented playwright, having penned works such as Carnival (1919) and The Purple Mask (1920), both of which enjoyed Broadway productions and later adaptations into films.
Matheson Lang passed away in Bridgetown, Barbados, leaving behind a rich legacy in the performing arts at the age of 68.
