Giuseppe Fortunino Francesco Verdi (October 10, 1813 – January 27, 1901) was a renowned Italian opera composer whose influence shaped the landscape of 19th-century music. Born into a modest family near Busseto, Verdi's early musical training was supported by a local benefactor, allowing him to hone his craft and eventually rise to prominence following the golden age of Bellini, Donizetti, and Rossini.

Verdi's early works were infused with the spirit of the Risorgimento, the movement advocating for Italy's unification. His opera Nabucco, premiered in 1842, featured the iconic chorus "Va, pensiero," which resonated deeply with nationalist sentiments. Although he briefly dabbled in politics, Verdi preferred a life of privacy and sought to balance his musical career with landownership in his homeland as he achieved success.

Following the triumph of his opera Aida in 1871, Verdi made a remarkable return to composition, producing three significant late works: the powerful Requiem in 1874, as well as the operas Otello in 1887 and Falstaff in 1893. His operas continue to captivate audiences, with masterpieces such as Rigoletto, Il trovatore, and La traviata representing the pinnacle of his middle period. The bicentennial of his birth in 2013 was celebrated globally, highlighting his enduring legacy in the world of classical music.
