Joe Viterelli
Joseph "Joe" Viterelli (March 10, 1937 – January 28, 2004) was a prominent Italian American actor celebrated for his memorable portrayals of mobsters and his distinctively Italian features.
Born to Italian immigrant parents in the Bronx, New York, Viterelli initially carved out a successful career in business. His path to acting began when he formed a friendship with director Leo Penn, who first encouraged him to consider the acting profession, recognizing his unique appearance. Years later, actor Sean Penn, Leo's son, urged Viterelli to audition for a role, leading to his debut in the film *State of Grace*. This marked the beginning of an extensive film career that spanned over 40 movies, firmly establishing him as a staple in Mafia-themed cinema.
Viterelli's career highlights include notable performances in films such as *Analyze This*, where he played the character Jelly, and various appearances in gritty crime dramas that showcased his talent for embodying the archetypal mobster. His final performance was in a 2004 Super Bowl advertisement for Staples, Inc., shortly before his untimely passing from a severe stomach hemorrhage following heart surgery in Las Vegas, Nevada, at the age of 66.
