James Noble
James Noble, born to a wholesale coal dealer in Dallas, developed a passion for acting during his youth, influenced by his frequent visits to pool halls and cinemas. His love for performance led him to participate in local theater productions and pursue drama studies at Southern Methodist University. After serving in the Navy during World War II, Noble moved to New York City to further refine his craft at the Actors Studio. His career took a significant turn when he starred in a revival of *Pygmalion*, where he met his future wife, actress Carolyn Coates.
Noble's television career began with appearances in popular soap operas such as *As the World Turns* (1956) and *A World Apart* (1970). He also made a mark on Broadway, notably in the musical *1776*, a role he reprised in the 1972 film adaptation. Throughout the late 1970s, he predominantly portrayed authority figures and politicians in films like *Being There* (1979) and *The Nude Bomb* (1980), while he also had a memorable role as Bo Derek's father in *10* (1979).
His most iconic role came in 1979 when he was cast as the lovable but forgetful "Governor Gene Gatling" on the sitcom *Benson*, a part he played until the show's conclusion in 1986. Noble briefly returned to television in 1988 as a Nebraska recording engineer in the short-lived sitcom *First Impressions*. His dedication to both his craft and mental health, often seeking therapy for self-doubt, marked his journey through the entertainment industry.
