Ian Ogilvy
Ian Raymond Ogilvy, born on September 30, 1943, is a distinguished English actor recognized for his significant contributions to film and television. He gained widespread fame as Simon Templar in the television series *Return of the Saint* from 1978 to 1979, a role that had originally been portrayed by Roger Moore. This performance positioned him as a potential successor for the iconic James Bond franchise when Moore contemplated leaving the role in the early 1980s. Although Ogilvy never officially took on the 007 mantle, he did embody similar characters in various media, including a series of commercials and an episode of *Kung Fu: The Legend Continues*.
A close collaborator with filmmaker Michael Reeves, Ogilvy starred in all three of Reeves's films: *Revenge of the Blood Beast* (1966), *The Sorcerers* (1967), and *Witchfinder General* (1968). He made memorable guest appearances on popular shows such as *The Avengers* and *Murder, She Wrote*, as well as in the esteemed series *I, Claudius*.
Throughout his extensive career, Ogilvy showcased his talent in numerous stage productions in London's West End, including *Design for Living* and *Run for Your Wife*. He also ventured into writing, penning a series of children's books, two novels, and two plays. His memoir, *Once a Saint*, was released in May 2016, followed by a collection of film reviews titled *Withering Slights* in 2020. Ogilvy's versatile career, spanning over 100 television appearances and various notable film roles, remains a testament to his enduring legacy in the entertainment industry.
