Renowned as one of the most prominent Spanish artists globally, he is affectionately called El Ruiseñor de Linares, El Divo de Linares, and El Niño. Born in Linares, Spain, his family relocated to Madrid when he was just nine months old. Raphael's passion for singing ignited at the tender age of three, and by four, he was performing in a children's choir. His exceptional talent was recognized at nine when he won the title of best child voice in Europe at a competition in Salzburg, Austria.

His professional journey commenced with the Dutch label Philips, where he developed his unique theatrical singing style, characterized by dramatic gestures and engaging performances. Raphael is known for personalizing his songs, often adapting lyrics to resonate with local audiences. His impressive vocal range, reminiscent of a choirboy, captivated listeners right from the start of his career.

In 1962 and 1963, at just nineteen years old, he garnered first, second, and third prizes at the prestigious Benidorm International Song Festival. After a brief stint with Barclay, he joined Hispavox, where he forged a long-lasting partnership with the esteemed Argentinian arranger Waldo de los Ríos and the celebrated Spanish songwriter Manuel Alejandro, leading to a series of unforgettable musical successes.
