Bartolomeo Pagano was an influential Italian actor during the Silent Era, renowned for his powerful performances. Before stepping into the world of cinema, he worked as a stevedore at the bustling port of Genoa. His life took a transformative turn in 1914 when he was cast as Maciste, a formidable slave, in the silent film masterpiece *Cabiria*. This iconic role not only marked the beginning of his film career but also established him as a pioneering figure in Italian cinema. Over the next 14 years, Pagano reprised the role of Maciste in several sequels, solidifying his status as a beloved international star.

In the 1920s, Pagano enjoyed immense popularity, becoming one of the highest-paid actors in Italy, earning as much as 600,000 lire annually. His impressive physique and charismatic screen presence captivated audiences, making him a household name. However, in 1929, he chose to retire from the film industry to focus on his personal life, marrying and raising a family in his native Genoa.

Pagano lived out his days in his hometown, where he passed away at the age of 68. He was laid to rest on the family estate in Italy, leaving behind a legacy as a trailblazer in the silent film era and a cultural icon in his country.
