Paul Brinegar
Paul Brinegar (December 19, 1917 – March 27, 1995) was a quintessential American character actor, celebrated particularly for his contributions to the western genre. With a career spanning nearly five decades, Brinegar became a familiar face on both the big and small screens, especially noted for his engaging portrayals of rugged cowboy sidekicks.
Brinegar's cinematic journey began with his first credited role in the 1948 film Larceny. His film career flourished, particularly in westerns, where he showcased his talent in over 100 films. By the late 1950s, he transitioned primarily to television, yet he continued to act until his final appearance in the 1994 film adaptation of Maverick, where he played a stagecoach driver.
He is perhaps best known for his role as George Washington Wishbone, the lively cook on CBS's Rawhide from 1959 to 1966. Notably, Brinegar had previously portrayed a similar character in the 1958 film Cattle Empire, which inspired Rawhide. His television credits also include a memorable turn as James H. "Dog" Kelley in The Life and Legend of Wyatt Earp and guest appearances on Perry Mason.
Brinegar's versatility shone through in various roles, including Jelly Hoskins in the CBS series Lancer and a barman in Clint Eastwood's High Plains Drifter. In the early 1980s, he entertained audiences as Lamar Pettybone on Matt Houston and later reprised his Rawhide character in The Gambler Returns: The Luck of the Draw. Through his extensive body of work, Paul Brinegar left an indelible mark on the western genre and television history.
