Brigitte Lin
Brigitte Lin Ching-Hsia (林青霞), born on November 3, 1954, in Taipei, is a celebrated Taiwanese actress known for her significant contributions to Chinese cinema, particularly in Taiwanese and Hong Kong films. Her journey in the film industry began in 1972 when a producer discovered her, leading to her debut in the romance film "Chuangwai." Lin quickly gained fame for her performances in numerous films based on the works of renowned author Chiung Yao.
Transitioning to Hong Kong cinema, Lin became one of the most in-demand actresses in the industry, amassing an impressive filmography of over 100 films. She is particularly noted for her groundbreaking roles that challenged gender norms, portraying transgender characters in films like "Peking Opera Blues," where she embodies a tomboy, and "New Dragon Gate Inn," where she dresses as a man. Her collaborations with director Tsui Hark proved fruitful, with notable films including "Swordsman II" and "III," where she played complex roles that further showcased her versatility.
In 1994, Lin married businessman Michael Ying and chose to retire from acting, although she made a brief return in the 1998 film "Bishonen." The couple has two daughters, born in 1997 and 2001. After years away from the spotlight, Lin made her first public appearance at the 2008 New York Film Festival during a screening of "Ashes of Time Redux."
