Hugh Marlowe (January 30, 1911 – May 2, 1982) was an accomplished American actor recognized for his work in film, television, stage, and radio. Born Hugh Herbert Hipple in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, he launched his theatrical journey in the 1930s at the Pasadena Playhouse in California. Throughout his career, Marlowe often took on roles as a supporting actor or secondary lead.

His notable film credits include classics such as Meet Me in St. Louis (1944), Twelve O'Clock High (1949), All About Eve (1950), and The Day the Earth Stood Still (1951). Additionally, he starred in Howard Hawks' Monkey Business (1952), Earth vs. the Flying Saucers (1956), Elmer Gantry (1960), Birdman of Alcatraz (1962), and Seven Days in May (1964).

In the realm of television, Marlowe became a familiar face on the daytime soap opera Another World, where he portrayed Jim Matthews, the patriarch of the Matthews family, from 1969 until his passing. His life came to an abrupt end due to a heart attack at the age of 71 in 1982. Marlowe's diverse body of work has left an enduring legacy in the entertainment industry.
