Sheb Wooley
Shelby Fredrick "Sheb" Wooley (April 10, 1921 – September 16, 2003) was a multifaceted American entertainer known for his contributions as a singer, songwriter, and actor. Wooley gained widespread acclaim in the music world with his 1958 novelty hit "The Purple People Eater," a whimsical rock and roll comedy track that captured the imaginations of audiences. Under the pseudonym Ben Colder, he also achieved success in the country genre with the song "Almost Persuaded No. 2," further showcasing his versatility.
In addition to his musical accomplishments, Wooley had a notable acting career. He is perhaps best remembered for his role as Cletus Summers, the principal of Hickory High School and assistant coach in the beloved 1986 film "Hoosiers," which celebrated high school basketball in Indiana. His filmography also includes significant roles such as Ben Miller, the brother of Frank Miller in the classic western "High Noon," and Travis Cobb in "The Outlaw Josey Wales." Furthermore, Wooley made his mark on television as Pete Nolan, a scout in the long-running series "Rawhide."
