Alfred Drake
Alfred Drake (October 7, 1914 - July 25, 1992) was a notable American actor and vocalist.
Originally named Alfred Capurro, he was born in New York City to parents who had immigrated from Recco, Genoa. Drake initiated his journey on Broadway while he was still studying at Brooklyn College. He is acclaimed for his prominent performances in the original Broadway productions of iconic musicals such as Oklahoma!, Kiss Me, Kate, and Kismet. Among his memorable roles, he portrayed Marshall Blackstone in the original staging of Babes in Arms, where he performed the title number, and Hajj in Kismet, a role that earned him a Tony Award. Additionally, Drake was recognized for his extensive work in Shakespearean theater, particularly for his portrayal of Benedick in Much Ado About Nothing, where he starred alongside the legendary Katharine Hepburn.
Drake’s contributions to the performing arts left a lasting impact, and he is remembered for his powerful voice and compelling performances. His legacy continues to influence aspiring actors and singers in the theater world today.
