Tokuko Sugiyama
Tokuko Sugiyama (杉山 とく子), born on August 16, 1926, in Tokyo, was a celebrated Japanese actress whose career spanned several decades. Originally named Tokuko Sugiyama, she gained recognition for her compelling performances in the film "The Town with a View of the Capsule" (キューポラのある街) and the beloved television series "Otoko wa Tsurai yo" (男はつらいよ) and "Wataru Seken wa Oni Bakari Series" (渡る世間は鬼ばかりシリーズ).
Sugiyama’s journey began after graduating from Jissen Women's Academy Second High School, where she initially worked as a nursery school teacher and in advertising for Chiba Newspaper. Her passion for acting led her to audition for Toho's New Face and subsequently join the Bungakuza theater company in 1946. After two years of dedicated training, she transitioned to the Haiyūza theater company, making her stage debut in 1948 with "Tooku e no Hitsuji Goya" (遠くへの羊飼い).
Her film career launched in 1949 with "Shiratori wa Kanashikarazu ya" (白鳥は悲しからずや), where she took on significant supporting roles. Sugiyama became best known for her portrayal of Tsune, Tora-san’s sister, in "Otoko wa Tsurai yo" and later as Hanako Noda in "Wataru Seken wa Oni Bakari," a role she continued into her 66th year, even from a nursing home in Saitama Prefecture.
Sugiyama retired from acting in 2005, with her last appearance in the 7th series of "Wataru Seken wa Oni Bakari." She passed away on August 28, 2014, at the age of 88 due to liver cancer. Throughout her illustrious
