Joseph Patrick Carrol Naish (January 21, 1896 – January 24, 1973) was a distinguished American character actor hailing from New York City. Naish's multifaceted career spanned over five decades, with his breakthrough role coming in the title character of the popular radio show "Life with Luigi," which aired from 1948 to 1953 and achieved impressive ratings, outpacing even Bob Hope.

Before transitioning to film, Naish honed his craft on stage, starting as a member of vaudeville performer Gus Edwards's troupe. Following World War I, he created his own song and dance act in Paris and found himself worldwide, traveling from Europe to Asia until engine troubles left him stranded in California in 1926. This twist of fate led to his uncredited film debut in "What Price Glory" (1926), igniting a prolific career marked by appearances in over 200 films.

Naish received two Academy Award nominations for Best Supporting Actor, first for his role in "Sahara" (1943) and again for "A Medal for Benny" (1945), for which he also earned a Golden Globe Award. While of Irish descent, he rarely portrayed Irish characters, instead embodying a diverse array of ethnicities throughout his filmography. In later years, he also became a television presence.

Married to actress Gladys Heaney from 1929 until his passing, Naish was also a devoted student of philosophy and theology. His contributions to the industry were recognized with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame at 6145 Hollywood Boulevard.
