Peter McEnery
Peter Robert McEnery, born on February 21, 1940, is a distinguished retired English actor known for his work on both stage and screen. Hailing from Walsall, Staffordshire, he is the son of Charles and Ada Mary McEnery (née Brinson) and received his education at Ellesmere College in Shropshire. He comes from an artistic family; his younger brothers include actor John McEnery and photographer David McEnery.
McEnery first gained recognition with his role as Barrett in the 1961 British neo-noir film "Victim," directed by Basil Dearden. This groundbreaking film tackled themes of homosexuality and blackmail, showcasing McEnery's talent. He further enriched his filmography with performances in "The Moon-Spinners" alongside Hayley Mills in 1964, and starred in Disney's "The Fighting Prince of Donegal" in 1966. On television, he portrayed Edwin Clayhanger in the adaptation of Arnold Bennett’s novels and Mr. Sloane in "Entertaining Mr Sloane" (1970).
A prominent figure with the Royal Shakespeare Company, McEnery played the title role in the 1979 production of "Pericles, Prince of Tyre" and took part in the ambitious 1982 adaptation of "Nicholas Nickleby." He also took on significant roles in classic Shakespeare productions, including Oberon in "A Midsummer Night's Dream" (1981) and Treves in "The Elephant Man" at the National Theatre in 1980.
In his personal life, McEnery married actress Julie Peasgood in 1978, with whom he has a daughter named Kate, born in 1981. The couple later divorced. He found love again with Julia St John, marrying her in 2007.
