Jay Benedict
Jay Benedict (April 11, 1951 – April 4, 2020) was a prominent American actor whose career flourished primarily in the United Kingdom. Known for portraying American characters in various British films and television shows, he gained widespread recognition for his role as Doug Hamilton in the long-running soap opera *Emmerdale* and as Captain/Major John Kieffer in the acclaimed detective series *Foyle's War*, particularly in the episodes "Invasion" and "All Clear." He also played Russ Jorden, Newt’s father, in the special "Extended Edition" of the iconic film *Aliens*.
Born in Burbank, California, Benedict moved to Europe in the 1960s and established a successful career in England. His diverse theatrical repertoire included notable productions such as *The Rocky Horror Show*, Harold Pinter’s *Sweet Bird of Youth*, and Franco Zeffirelli’s *Filumena*, where he starred alongside Pierce Brosnan. In 2013, he showcased his talent in Steven Berkoff's one-act play *An Actor's Lament*, which premiered at several venues, including the Edinburgh Festival Fringe.
Benedict's television credits were extensive, featuring roles in *Seven Wonders of the Industrial World*, *Lilyhammer*, and *Sharpe's Honour*, among others.
