Chafia Boudraa, born Atika Boudraa on April 22, 1930, in Constantine, Algeria, was a celebrated actress whose career left a significant mark on Algerian cinema and television. A dedicated mother of eleven, she became a widow after her husband, a fighter for the Front de Libération Nationale (FLN) during the Algerian War of Independence, was killed in combat in 1960.
In 1964, Boudraa relocated to Algiers, where she juggled various jobs, including caregiver and switchboard operator, to support her family before making her debut in the film industry. Her breakthrough came through the television series "El Hariq" (Fire), directed by Mustapha Badie and based on Mohammed Dib's novel, which brought her widespread recognition.
Boudraa also showcased her talent on stage, notably portraying the widow in a production of "The Taming of the Shrew" at the National Theater of Algiers. Over a remarkable career that spanned more than fifty years, she appeared in numerous films and television series, becoming a prominent figure in both local and international entertainment circles. One of her notable performances was in the film "Hors-La-Loi" by Rachid Bouchareb, which represented Algeria at the prestigious Cannes Film Festival in 2010, depicting the tumultuous lives of three brothers during the Algerian conflict.
Chafia Boudraa passed away on May 22, 2022, leaving behind a legacy celebrated for its depth and cultural significance.
