Ahmed Benaïssa (Arabic: أحمد بن عيسى), a prominent Franco-Algerian actor, was born on March 2, 1944, in Algiers and passed away on May 20, 2022, in Cannes. His journey into the world of performing arts began during childhood summers in Nédroma, where he was captivated by local religious festivals. At the tender age of nine, he performed in front of a friend's camera, igniting his passion for cinema.

Following Algeria's independence in 1962, Benaïssa moved to Paris to join his father, who had fled due to political activities. He developed a keen interest in theater while attending boarding school in Oise, eventually immersing himself in the artistic scene in Lyon. His breakthrough in acting came when he enrolled in an animation program for Algerian expatriates, leading to notable performances at the Algerian National Theater (TNA) under the direction of Alloula.

Benaïssa's career flourished as he transitioned between theater and film, gaining recognition for his work in both mediums. He returned to Algeria in 1971, witnessing a decline in theater's artistic integrity, which prompted him to focus on cinema. Over the years, he became known for his compelling performances and directing efforts, culminating in the acclaimed 2007 production "El Maghara El Mounfajira."

His final years were marked by a return to the stage and cinema, with ongoing projects such as "Goutte d'or," which he was promoting at the Cannes Film Festival at the time of his passing. Benaïssa's legacy endures through his contributions to the arts and the influence he had on a generation of actors, as he was laid to rest in the El-Alia cemetery in Algiers.
