Chuck Dukowski

1 title Acting Feb 01, 1954 San Pedro, California

Chuck Dukowski, born Gary Arthur McDaniel on February 1, 1954, is a prominent figure in the American punk rock scene, best recognized for his role as the bassist and occasional songwriter for the influential band Black Flag. Raised in a middle-class household in San Pedro, Los Angeles, Dukowski's musical roots can be traced to his German heritage, which boasted a lineage of musicians and composers.

Dukowski's musical journey began in 1973 with his first band, Würm. By 1977, the band had relocated to Hermosa Beach, where they lived communally in a house dubbed "the Würmhole." This vibrant hub attracted local musicians, including Keith Morris and Greg Ginn, who were part of the scene. Shortly thereafter, Dukowski joined their band, initially named Panic, which was rebranded as Black Flag due to conflicts over the name. He contributed significantly to the band’s creative output, writing or co-writing iconic tracks such as "My War," "The Bars," and "Modern Man." Dukowski parted ways with Black Flag in 1983, just before the recording of My War, but continued to support the band as their manager until 1986.

In 1978, he co-founded SST Records with Ginn, playing a crucial role until 1989. His unique stage name, Chuck Dukowski, originated from a Zippo lighter he found, leading him to craft a name that combined a sense of machismo with a nod to his Polish heritage. Dukowski's impact on punk rock remains undeniable, as evidenced by his contributions to the genre and his appearance in the cult documentary, The Decline of Western Civilization.
