Guy Kibbee
Guy Bridges Kibbee (March 6, 1882 – May 24, 1956) was a prominent American actor known for his work on both stage and screen. Born in El Paso, Texas, Kibbee's journey in the entertainment industry began aboard Mississippi riverboats, where he honed his craft before transitioning to Broadway, where he gained recognition for his dynamic performances.
In the 1930s, Kibbee relocated to California, joining the ranks of what became known as Warner Bros.' stock company. This group consisted of a rotating ensemble of contract actors who played various supporting roles across numerous productions. Kibbee was particularly adept at portraying humorous and eccentric characters, earning acclaim for his roles in several classic films. His notable appearances include the iconic musicals 42nd Street (1933) and The Gold Diggers of 1933 (1933), as well as the adventure film Captain Blood (1935) and the political drama Mr. Smith Goes to Washington (1939). He also delivered a nuanced performance as an expatriate innkeeper in Joan Crawford’s Rain (1932).
Sadly, Kibbee's life came to an end in 1956 due to complications from Parkinson's disease in Long Island, New York. His contributions to cinema and theater continue to be celebrated, marking him as a memorable figure in American entertainment history.
