Margaret Thatcher
Margaret Hilda Thatcher, known as Baroness Thatcher, LG, OM, DStJ, PC, FRS, HonFRSC (née Roberts), was a prominent British political figure born on October 13, 1925, who passed away on April 8, 2013. Serving as the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom from 1979 to 1990, she was the first woman to assume this role and remains the longest-serving prime minister of the 20th century. As the Leader of the Conservative Party from 1975 to 1990, she was a transformative force in British politics, famously associated with the economic philosophy known as Thatcherism.
Thatcher pursued a degree in chemistry at Somerville College, Oxford, and initially worked as a research chemist before transitioning to law as a barrister. In 1959, she entered politics as the Member of Parliament for Finchley. Her career took off when Edward Heath appointed her Secretary of State for Education and Science in 1970. She made history by becoming the first woman to lead a major political party in the UK after winning the Conservative leadership election against Heath in 1975.
Her premiership was marked by significant economic reforms aimed at curbing inflation and revitalizing the British economy, particularly after the turmoil of the Winter of Discontent. Despite facing challenges, including an assassination attempt by the Provisional IRA and opposition during the miners' strike, she secured a decisive victory in the 1982 Falklands War, which bolstered her popularity. Thatcher's policies led to a deregulated financial market in 1986, contributing to an economic boom.
Though she won a third term in 1987, her support for the controversial Community Charge and her Euroscepticism led to her resignation in 1990. After retiring from Parliament, she was granted a life peerage, becoming Baroness Thatcher of Kesteven. Her death in 2013 marked the end of a storied and contentious legacy
