Colin Welland

Colin Welland, a distinguished actor and screenwriter, is perhaps best known for his remarkable achievement at the 1982 Academy Awards, where he secured the Oscar for Best Original Screenplay for the acclaimed film *Chariots of Fire*, famously declaring, "The British are Coming!" His cinematic journey began with a memorable performance as the compassionate Mr. Farthing in *Kes* (1969), a role that earned him a BAFTA Award and remains a fan favorite.

Born in Liverpool and raised in Leigh, Welland initially pursued a career as an art teacher before transitioning into acting. He quickly gained recognition for his portrayal of PC Graham in the iconic BBC police drama *Z Cars*, which solidified his status as a household name. Beyond *Chariots of Fire*, he crafted numerous noteworthy plays and screenplays, including the BAFTA-winning *Kisses at Fifty*, which was later adapted into *Twice in a Lifetime* featuring Gene Hackman. His other significant works include *Leeds United!*, inspired by a historical labor strike involving his mother-in-law, as well as *Yanks*, *A Dry White Season*, and *War of the Buttons*.

In addition to his writing, Welland's acting credits encompass roles in *Straw Dogs*, *Blue Remembered Hills*, and *Sweeney!*. He passed away at the age of 81 on November 2, 2015, after a prolonged battle with Alzheimer's disease, leaving behind a rich legacy in both film and television.
